Spanish Wine - Tempranillo

If you love the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon but the fruitiness of Grenache then you'll love Tempranillo.

There are 4 legal aging terms that are listed on most bottles of Spanish wine.

  • Crianza: These reds require 2 years of aging, with 6 months in oak. Traditionally, producers use American oak, which is much stronger than other types of oak (such as French oak).

  • Reserva: These are reds that are aged 3 years, with 1 year in oak. These wines are a big step up in quality and have rich, round flavors because of the minimum oak requirement.

  • Gran Reserva: Reserved for wines from phenomenal vintages and aged a minimum of 5 years before release with 18 months of oak aging, most producers will do 20-30 months in barrel to create the outstanding flavor.

  • Vin Joven: Rarely aged in oak, Vin Jovens are released young and meant to be consumed right away. These are uncommon outside of Spain.

Portugal Wine from Douro Valley

Douro (pronounced DOH-roo) Valley is located in Northern Portugal and is undoubtedly the most beautiful wine region in the world.

The red wines, instead of cabernet sauvignon and pinot noir, it has port grapes, including touriga nacional, touriga franca, tinta barroca and tinta roriz, which over in Spain Rioja goes by the name tempranillo.

  • Touriga Nacional is widely considered to be the most favoured and preferred grape variety in the Douro. It is highly vigorous, has low yields and produces small dark blue berries high in phenolic compounds which impart a deep colour to the wine. It is a difficult variety to manage and in the Douro Valley it isn't widely planted, less than 5%, as most farmers prefer to grow a variety with higher yields.

  • Touriga Franca: Originally known as Touriga Francesa, this variety is the most widely planted port grape in the Douro Valley. It thrives in hot, dry areas giving consistent and reliable yields of fairly compact clusters of grapes which can be sensitive to bunch rot. The leaves are very similar to Touriga Nacional making identification between the two difficult, although the leaves in general are rounder with less deep sinuses.

  • Tinta Barroca was at one time a very popular variety for port production as it gives large yields and high sugar levels. The colour and structure of our wines made from Tinta Barroca are not especially intense, although it does have a low tendency to oxidation so ages well.

  • Tinta Roriz is actually the well-known Spanish variety, Tempranillo, which is grown extensively in the Rioja region.

The white wines are extremely special because the grapes are indigenous to the region and are not grown anywhere else but Douro.  Most whites are labeled Douro Branco (white) and the wines have great character, acidity and minerality.  The five main white grape varietals are:

  • Malvasia – Malvasia Fina is the second most planted grape varietal in Douro.  It is elegant, floral and has wonderful spice components.

  • Rabigato – In Portuguese Rabigato also means “cat’s tail”.  It is a slow maturing grape and is fresh and fruity and maintains nice acidity, even in the Douro heat.  It is also an ageworthy varietal.

  • Viosinho – This varietal is low yielding and full-bodied.  It has nice concentration and texture.  It is highly aromatic and many refer to it as the Portuguese Sauvignon Blanc.

  • Gouveio – Is another age worthy varietal.  It has an oily texture and  maintains its acidity.

  • Arinto – Is one of Portugal’s oldest grape.  It maintains great acidity in the heat and has fresh citrus notes.  This varietal is often used as a blending grape.

Spanish Wine - Rioja

In Spain, the region famous for Tempranillo is Rioja. Rioja Wine from 'Crianza' to 'Gran Reserva' are full-bodied.

Rioja has a wine control board, called the Consejo Regulador DOCa Rioja, who inspects the quality of producers to ensure consistency.
